A Weathered Sentinel of the Mother Road: The Ash Fork Route 66 Grill and Ice Cream Shoppe

Ash Fork, Arizona, proudly known as the "Flagstone Capital of the World," is a town where Route 66 history is etched directly into the local architecture. While many travelers focus heavily on newly restored neon, there is a raw, enduring beauty in the roadside landmarks that have been left to weather the high desert elements. One of the most fascinating examples is the timeworn structure that most recently housed the Ash Fork Route 66 Grill and Ice Cream Shoppe.

Located at 322 Lewis Ave, Ash Fork, AZ, this building is a quiet witness to nearly a century of American highway culture. The structure itself was constructed in the mid-1920s, aligning perfectly with the early, transformative years of the Mother Road. Over the decades, its walls have continually adapted to the changing tides of passing travelers and locals alike.

From the mid-1980s through at least the mid-1990s, the location operated as a local watering hole known as the Crow Bar. It even achieved a brief moment of Hollywood fame when it served as a filming location for the 1992 sci-fi action movie Universal Soldier, appearing on screen under its "Crow Bar" moniker. Years later, by 2013, the painted sign above the entrance bore a sweeter identity: the Ash Fork Route 66 Grill and Ice Cream Shoppe.

Today, one of the building's most striking features is its heavily weathered rooftop sign, perfectly captured in the photo above. The white paint is actively peeling, and the true identity of its original neon lettering has long faded into a local mystery. Yet, the distinct Route 66 shield remains boldly visible in the center. Standing against the brilliant Arizona sky, this sign serves as a rugged, abstract monument to the golden era of the great American road trip.
