Location Details

The Wagon Wheel Motel is located at 901 East Washington Boulevard, Cuba, Missouri 65453, situated on the historic eastern edge of town directly along old U.S. Route 66.

Driving & Navigation Details

  • Highway Access: The property can be easily reached from Interstate 44 by taking Exit 208.

  • Local Route: Drive south on Highway 19 / Franklin Street into downtown Cuba, then turn left onto Washington Boulevard (Old Route 66) and continue for approximately a half-mile.

  • Orientation: The iconic neon sign, which has been standing for over 60 years, is uniquely positioned to be clearly visible to traffic arriving from the east.

Historical & Current Status

  • Distinction: It is celebrated as the oldest continuously operating motel on all of Route 66, welcoming travelers since the 1930s.

  • Architecture: The property consists of beautifully preserved Ozark sandstone cottages built by master stonemason Leo Friesenhan.

  • Preservation: The landmark was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 and underwent a major historical renovation.

  • Ownership: In April 2026, the property was purchased by preservationists Christina and Rich Dinkela, who also own the nearby historic Shamrock Court in Sullivan, Missouri.
