Blue Spruce Lodge Click to open side panel for more information is a historic 19-unit auto court located at 1119 E. Highway 66 in Gallup, New Mexico. While it was long considered a classic slice of roadside Americana for those traveling U.S. Route 66, the motel is currently closed.

  • History: Opened in 1949 by John Novak and John Milosevich, the lodge was originally advertised with the slogan "For A Pleasant Stay in the Indian Capital," highlighting its proximity to the Navajo Nation and other Indigenous homelands.

  • Iconic Signage: The property is highly recognizable for its striking neon sign shaped like a blue spruce tree, which stood out front to beckon weary travelers and served as a famous photo opportunity for decades.

  • Vintage Amenities: In its heyday, the lodge promoted modern mid-century conveniences, promising visitors steam heat, air-conditioning, tiled baths, and wall-to-wall carpets.

  • Current Status: In May 2022, the city of Gallup "red-tagged" and ordered the closure of the lodge (along with five other vintage motels in the area) due to severe code violations. City inspections cited extensive structural decay, mold, unsafe flooring, and plumbing issues. Following the owner's passing, the motel reportedly went into probate and was put up for sale, leaving it shuttered with no immediate plans for renovation.
