Out of all the incredible stops on our drive from Santa Monica to Chicago, our overnight stay at the Blue Swallow Motel is one of the most memorable—and it's all thanks to the owner, Rob. He has this brilliant way of creating a warm community vibe just by placing chairs in little groups outside the rooms and setting out free coffee in the morning. It naturally encourages everyone to sit, sip, and swap stories. Dez and I got so swept up chatting with our fellow travelers that we completely lost track of time and practically had to scramble so we wouldn't miss our checkout!
We were having so much fun and feeling so completely relaxed that I actually forgot to shoot any daytime photos before we left. We ended up having to drive all the way back after officially finishing our Route 66 trip just to get those daylight shots! But honestly, when you look at the sweeping neon magic captured in this night time photo with the light trails created by cars driving by, you can see why it’s so easy to get caught up in the magic of this place.
