Location Details

The GPS coordinates for the Old Bluewater Motel on historic New Mexico Route 66 are 35.248007, -107.955911.

Address: 2331 NM-122, Bluewater, NM 87005

Route 66 Segment: Located along NM Highway 122 (the old Route 66 alignment) just west of Milan and Grants, New Mexico.

History & Amenities: Opened around 1957 by Nestor E. King, the motel originally boasted 22 "ultra-modern" units. It catered to both highway travelers and the growing local population during the area's uranium boom, offering conveniences like air-conditioning, wall-to-wall carpeting, tile baths, and a children's playground.

The Bluewater Inn: The property also featured an adjacent restaurant, the Bluewater Inn, which operated in the 1960s and was known for serving charcoal-broiled steaks, seafood, and cocktails to weary motorists.

Iconic Signage: While the main buildings have largely fallen into disrepair, the property's massive custom neon sign—built by the Zeon Sign Company of Albuquerque—still stands. Once painted a vibrant blue, the rusted and faded sign remains a highly photographed landmark for those exploring the remnants of the Mother Road.

Current Status: The motel was ultimately forced to close after Interstate 40 completely bypassed the old highway, causing the town's tourist economy to dry up. Today, the abandoned property is largely used as a makeshift used car lot and storage space for old vehicles.
