The Whiting Brothers on Route 66

A Roadside Empire: The Whiting Brothers operated a large and popular chain of businesses along Route 66, which included gas stations, motels, cafes, and grocery stores.Peak Operations: During the height of their success, the company managed nearly 100 different locations dotting the highway across multiple states.Decline and Legacy: The business empire came to an end in the 1990s, with the vast majority of their properties having been closed or sold off by the mid-1980s. Today, the remnants of the chain consist primarily of their signature fading yellow and orange signs, alongside crumbling buildings.Sole Survivor: There is only one station that continues to operate under the Whiting Brothers name today, located in Moriarty, New Mexico. It was purchased by a former employee in the 1980s who chose to keep the original name.
